|Collection No.||Stone Clubs Collection|
|Size||Heights: 100 - 120 cm|
This fine collection of old Stone Headed Clubs are from different area of Papua New Guinea, The stone Club Head are from the 19th Century and some much earlier. Stone Clubs were made and used all over the island of New Guinea. Ancient Stone Club Heads are found buried in peoples gardens that were left or lost by previous generations and other Stone Club Heads have been in families or clans for centuries. The Clubs come in several types of forms described as : Stone Discs , Pineapple Headed . Star Shaped , Round Shaped & Oval Tubular, there are also some variations and unique shapes. This collection I have made over 35 years by keeping the best examples I have had the chance to buy. When they are displayed on stands in a group they look like an amazing sculptural installation as my photos suggest.
Provenance: Some of these Clubs are from the important historical collections like Toast and Rohu who were two woman who ran a business specialising in taxidermy and native artefacts in the late 19th century on George Street in Sydney Australia. Some came from Tyrells Curios also a Sydney Business selling Native Artefacts and photos in the 1930’s.
