This beautiful old small Amulet Figure is from the Murik Lakes area in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. In the form of an female ancestor who provide protection from malevolent sorcery. Amulet figures like this were carried in small woven bags and sometimes worn around the neck of kept in a larger string bag. Amulets could also help with hunting prowess, controlling the weather or even love magic. The standing female figure is wearing small grass skirt , the whole figure has an old black patina from long handling. This figurte would date from the early to mid 20th Century.
Provenance: Nicolai Michoutouckine (1929-2010) he made one extended collecting trip to Papua New Guinea in 1967. Nicolai was an artist of international repute, Russian born and French he lived in Vanuatu for most of his life. A keen collector and promoter of Pacific arts for many decades, his collection was exhibited in a travelling exhibition that went around the world. Him and his lifetime partner Aloi were also my friends
