These Three Fine Old Shell Necklaces are from Polynesia from the 19th to early 20th Century

The outside Necklace in the photo I believe is from Fiji or Samoa, it came from the famous BL Hornshaw Collection in the early 2oth Century, it’s in very good condition and is 77 cm in length.

The second Shell Ornament in the photo is a Shell Headband made from tightly spaced shells that sit perfectly in their rows, this I believe is from French Polynesia early 2oth century ‘

The third Necklace in the center position in the photo is made of tiny red and white shells strung together beautifully, I am not sure where in Polynesia these are from & if you know I would be grateful to hear from you.

Shell ornaments in Polynesia & throughout the Pacific Islands are highly valued for wearing but also as a type of traditional wealth and currency that was used for many types of ceremonial purposes. The artists collected shells & then pierced each one individually before stringing them in ways that made the shells all hang perfectly in rows.

Provenance: The Todd Barlin Collection of Oceanic Art
