Magic Bones Yali People Central Highlands West Papua Indonesia
|Size||14cm x 5cm|
This pair of ancient bone amulets are actually turtle ribs from sea turtles but the people living in the remote Central Highlands of West Papua they are from an unknown animal. These were collected in the Eipomek area in the Central Highlands of West Papua Irian Jaya Indonesia. We were told by a shaman that these bones can make the owner invisible and able to fly. They have a deep old patina as if the have been handled for generations. I made several trips to the Yali Tribes and they were very kind and welcoming , the old men still wore the many loops of cane around their waist that made them look like a human slinky toy. Collected in Eipomek in 1986. Many of the objects collected on this trip are now in major museum collections around the world including The Musee du Quai Branly Museum in Paris and the Jolika Collection at the De Young Fine Art Museum in San Francisco California.
