Ancestor Figure Yuat River area in East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea
|Size||Height 29cm without the stand|
This beautiful small ancestor figure is likely from the Yuat River area in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. Here you see the creative genius of Sepik River master carvers. The figure with a large head and expressive face is sitting on a rounded base with the legs forward and the arms are held backwards so the hand can rest of the back as if he was stretching. The first time I saw this figure I knew I would really like it but over time it has become one of my favourite figures and always puts a smile on my face.
Likely dating from around 1940-1950s.
Provenance: The Todd Barlin Collection of New Guinea Art
